Monthly railway carloadings continue to drop

OTTAWA, Ont. — According to Statistics Canada, the freight loaded by railways in Canada during March of this year totalled 20 million metric tonnes.

This total, which excludes intermodal traffic, was down 0.9 per cent compared with March 2001.

Intermodal tonnage, represented by container-on-flat-cars and trailer-on-flat-car advanced 2.7 per cent to two million metric tonnes compared with same period a year earlier.
