Apparent surcharge compromise reached in Ontario
TORONTO (Oct. 23, 2000) — A committee of independent owner-operators, truck fleets, and shippers in Ontario reportedly agreed on a set of guidelines for passing on fuel surcharges to owner-operators.
The agreement, reached Friday, was brokered by a provincially appointed mediator. It recommends that fleets use a surcharge formula that would give independent truckers anywhere from 14 to 30 cents a mile more in compensation for the high cost of fuel.
Carriers would be expected to pass along 100% of the surcharge they receive from shippers.
The agreement is non-binding.
