NY-NJ ports reopen after wildcat strike
NEWARK, N.J. — Longshormen who defied their own union and walked off the job at the ports of Newark, Port Elizabeth, Staten Island and South Philadelphia, according to local media.
The ports had been shut down since Tuesday when the International Longshoremen’s Association (ILA) workers staged a wildcat strike to protest Del Monte Fresh Produce moving its bulk shipping operation to a non ILA-staffed terminal.
Union leaders said the strike was carried out by the rank-and-file members without their consent.
The workers also defied a judge’s restraining order barring ILA members from interfering with normal business operations.
