ELD violations won’t mean CSA points
TORONTO, ON - Carriers that operate across the border don't have to fear for their Compliance, Safety, and Accountability (CSA) scores if they are not compliant with the Electronic Logging Device (ELD) mandate before the Dec. 18 deadline. Federal Officials in the United States are confirming that drivers who are cited roadside for non-compliance before April 1, 2018 will be issued a "no points cite" which won't affect the driver or carrier in the CSA system, reports Heavy Duty Trucking.
Trucking conditions growing stronger: FTR
BLOOMINGTON, IN - Trucking conditions were up again in September according to analysts at FTR Intelligence. Conditions showed growth of more than 3% month-over-month, despite what they called the weakest recovery on record related to efforts being made following Hurricanes Harvey and Irma. FTR predicts strong demand for truck freight going forward should keep market conditions solidly positive through 2018.
Recruitment the focus of Women with Drive summit
TORONTO, ON - Recruitment and retention will be the topic of discussion at Trucking HR Canada's fourth annual Women with Drive summit being held March 1, 2018 in Toronto. The panel discussion will focus on company branding on multiple platforms and how that can influence or help companies attract employees. Called "Outside in" the panel will feature experts from the social media platform Linkedin, and the employment website Workopolis. The panel will talk about attracting women and other under-represented groups to the trucking industry.
Ontario announces tools for winter roads
TORONTO, ON - The Ontario government is offering support to drivers trying to navigate winter roads this year. Today Ontario Minister of Transportation Steven Del Duca announced expansions to two digital tools for drivers to help them plan safe routes through snowy conditions. The website Track My Plow now covers all 20 of the province's winter maintenance contract areas, allowing drivers to see the location of plows on highways during and after a storm, and use roadways that have been cleared.
New auto carrier regs come to Ontario
TORONTO, ON - The Ontario Ministry of Transportation (MTO) and the Ontario Trucking Association (OTA) have announced a "made-in-Canada" approach to harmonizing regulations for Stinger-Steer auto carriers. Earlier this week MTO launched the Extended Stinger-Steer Auto Carrier (ESSAC) Special Vehicle Configuration Permit Program. Carriers and other industry groups have been asking for an overhaul to the Ontario regulations surrounding the auto carriers since the passage of the FAST act in the U.S. in 2015 changed regulations to things like length, and front and rear load overhang limits south of the border.
BCTA names Earle as president/ CEO
LANGLEY, BC - The British Columbia Trucking Association (BCTA) will begin the new year with a new president and Chief Executive Officer. The association announced Dave Earle will assume the role on Jan. 8, 2018. In the role he will be responsible for the overall management and direction of the provincial association, as well as promoting its interests and the interests of members with governments, the business community, and the public.
OPP stage Toronto area CMV blitz
MILTON, ON - Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) are cracking down on unsafe truck drivers in an enforcement blitz in the Greater Toronto Area, starting today. Setting up camp at a weigh station off Ontario Highway 401 between Milton and Oakville, the OPP's Highway Safety (HSD) Division say they are looking to raise awareness about safe driving practices for commercial motor vehicle (CMV) drivers, while also conducting inspections to look for unsafe operators. As part of the safety awareness campaign, OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt from the HSD participated in a ride-along with the OPP transport truck to get a look at morning road conditions and point unsafe driving practices from all drivers.
Kriska gives young hero a truck
TORONTO, ON - The smoke pouring into the truck was thick and there were just moments to act when Ickroop Mangat, just 23-years-old, and his trainer Dave* were involved in a multi-vehicle collision during a sudden, zero-viability snowstorm outside Montreal last Winter. The new driver for Kriska Transportation acted in a heartbeat, kicking in the driver's side window and crawling out of the cab before helping his instructor out behind him. Panicked and on fire, the instructor ran from the truck, but Mangat tackled him to the ground, practicing the 'stop, drop, and roll' method to put out the flames and save the man's life. His actions on that day earned Mangat the Bridgestone-Ontario Trucking Association Truck Hero Award at their annual conference last week, but Mangat says he's no hero.
Great Dane names Supplier of the Year
SAVANNAH, GA - Trailer and truck bodies manufacturer Great Dane is singing the praises of components supplier Accuride, making them their 2017 supplier of the year for large suppliers. The company announced the accolade last week, also awarding Accuride the 2017 Quality Excellence Award for exceeding Great Dane's quality performance expectations.
Ontario investing in autonomous vehicle research
VAUGHAN, ON - The Government of Ontario has signaled it's serious about ushering self-driving vehicles, including those in commercial fleets, into the province. Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne and Ontario Minister of Transportation Steven Del Duca were with the Residential and Civil Construction Alliance of Ontario (RCCAO) last week to announce an $80 million government investment in the development of the vehicles through the launch of the Autonomous Vehicle Innovation Network (AVIN).
