North American Truck Orders Slow in June
COLUMBUS, IN - Orders for new Class 8 trucks in North America slipped a little during June from the month before while they fell dramatically in the medium-duty Class 5 through Class 7 sector, according to new figures released on Monday by commercial vehicle industry data provider ACT Research.
Average Diesel Cost Lowest in Nearly Three Months
LONDON, ON and WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The average Canadian price of diesel continues moving lower, hitting its lowest level this week since just after mid-April. New figures released by the petroleum information services provider The Kent Group show it's at $1.109 per liter, down $0.008 from last week. This is also the third straight weekly drop and has shed $0.015 during this time.
New Ferry Says Goodbye Diesel, Hello LNG
MONTREAL -- While some in trucking continue mulling over whether to switch at least a few of their trucks from diesel to natural gas, a little history was made Monday when first ferry to run on liquefied natural gas (LNG) in North America was commissioned in Canada.
Canada Benefiting from U.S. Port Congestion
WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Congestion at U.S. ports is providing cargo interests with additional incentives to use ports in Canada and Mexico, according to a member of the U.S. Federal Maritime Commission, and that is likely benefiting Canadian truckers, at least somewhat. According to the Journal of Commerce, FMC Commissioner Richard Lidinsky talked about the issue at a recent meeting of the FMC as part of an update of a 2012 report that examined whether the U.S. harbor maintenance tax was causing diversions of cargo from U.S. ports. The tax is collected on U.S. imports to help pay for the cost of maintaining port facilities. Three years after the first report, "we have seen that shippers are not going to stop diverting cargo through Canadian ports, and that Mexican ports continue to present another option for those individual shippers looking for alternative routes," Lidinsky said.
