Cat names new chief exec

PEORIA, Ill. — Douglas Oberhelman will become Caterpillar‘s chief executive officer, starting July 2010.

Oberhelman, who has been with the company for 34 years, is currently a group president at Caterpillar. He succeeds Jim Owens, who will retire.

Caterpillar is one of the world’s largest construction equipment and off-road heavy-duty engine suppliers.

It exited the on-highway market last year, but announced later that it would provide Navistar the platform for the truckmaker’s upcoming 15-liter MaxxForce 15 engine.

The two companies also announced a joint venture to produce a line of commercial highway trucks for markets outside of North America.
