Delphi rolls out back-up alarm

Even if a truck driver had eyes in the back of his head, it wouldn’t make a lick of difference if he has to back his way into tricky dock. He needs mirrors, guile, skill, and perhaps a spotter to stay out of trouble.
For an added measure of security, though, electronics giant Delphi Delco Electronics Systems introduced its Forewarn Back-Up Aid (BUA) retrofit kits. The Delphi subsidiary is marketing two models, one that fits into a two-inch trailer hitch and one that permanently mounts to the vehicle.
Delphi says its radar-based system has one of the longest-range detection zones on the market, as far as 16.4 feet away. It activates automatically when the ignition is on and the vehicle is in a reverse gear. A loud audible warning becomes more frequent and persistent as the vehicle gets closer to an obstacle or person.
