Hino confirms new Southern Ontario manufacturing plant
MISSISSAUGA, Ont. — Hino has announced it will build 2,000 trucks a year at a new assembly plant in Woodstock, Ont.
The Japanese truckmaker, owned by Toyota Motor Corp., settled rumours that Hino was planning to build a new North American facility, with a Woodstock, Ont. plant site as the frontrunner.
Another option being considered late last year was Quebec, where Hino has a very strong presence in the medium-duty, cabover market.
The plant, which at first will employ 45 people and produce trucks exclusively for the North American market, is the company’s second overseas manufacturing facility. Hino opened both a L.A., California plant and a Southaven, Miss. national parts distribution centre over the last couple years.
Until now Hino has outsourced the assembly of trucks for both the Canadian and U.S. markets to TABC, a local production business of Toyota Motor Corp. By establishing the assembly base in Canada, Hino “plans to shorten the delivery time to customers and reinforce its ability to respond to customer demands while also promoting a reduction in logistics costs,” the company said.
With the establishment of the plant in Canada, vehicle assembly will be added to HMSC business operations and the company will be renamed Hino Motors Canada.
