Officials promise probe over Navistar plant closing

TORONTO – Ontario government lawyers could investigate whether truck and engine maker Navistar breached any funding agreements after deciding last week to officially close its idled Chatham, Ont. heavy-duty truck plant.

The plant was originally set to close in 2003 but was saved when Navistar received a $65-million in funding from the Canadian federal and Ontario governments – on top of about $40 million in labor concessions from the CAW.

"If the company is found to breach any of our funding agreement we’ll recover those funds," Chatham area Liberal MPP Pat Hoy, told news media.

The Ontario NDP is calling on the Ontario Liberals to forge ahead with the investigation.

According to the London Free Press, the NDP accused the Ontario government of failing to follow through on a previous promise to investigate the company after it idled the plant in 2009 and laid off all remaining workers.
