Ontario cops nab 106 trucks in safety blitz

MISSISSAUGA, Ont. — Ontario Provincial Police are saying that almost half of the trucks inspected during a surprise safety blitz this week (9/25/2005) were taken off the road. Although that’s less than the rate of vehicles that went to “truck jail” in a similar blitz last year.

According to the Toronto Sun, the event — billed as the largest-ever one-day truck blitz in the trucking hub of Peel Region — nabbed 106 trucks out of a total of 231 inspected.

Ont. truck cops were on the hunt in Peel this week

A team of 50 officers from Peel, York, Toronto and the OPP, along with
provincial inspectors, laid 109 Highway Traffic Act charges, as well as other charges under the Environmental Protection Act and one under the Transportation of Dangerous Goods Act.

Trucks were taken off the road for at least one serious safety violation. About half the trucks taken off the road had loose or cracked leaf springs, police said.

The 45.8 percent failure rate was slightly lower than the 46.5 per cent
rate recorded during a two-day blitz in Peel last year, however, when 305 vehicles were inspected.
