Sprinter van plant to be relocated
NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. — DaimlerChrysler AG will shift assembly of its Dodge Sprinter vans by opening a new plant in South Carolina.
According to Associate Press, the North Charleston, S.C., plant will initially employ 200 to 300 workers, and DaimlerChrysler hopes to expand to as many as 1,800 employees by 2010.
The Sprinter is a diesel-powered cargo/passenger van, built by Mercedes in Germany. The vans are rebuilt from kits shipped from Germany.
The Ladson plant where the vans are currently built will be scaled down. That plant also makes American LaFrance firetrucks.
DaimlerChrysler is the parent of U.S.-based Freightliner LLC, which includes Freightliner Trucks, Sterling Trucks, Western Star and Thomas Built Buses.
