Trailer maker makes layoffs permanent

LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Wabash National announced that the 790 plant workers it previously laid off will not be coming back to work anytime soon.

The trailer maker said in January that the layoffs would likely be temporary following a scheduled holiday shutdown and that the Lafayette, Ind. workers were expected back in the second quarter.

However, market softness has been more severe than first expected. Demand for new trailers could fall by as much as 60 percent in 2009 compared to last year.

Just over a week ago, Wabash questioned how long it could survive the current downturn, saying that closing down operations is one of several options being considered.
