Wagging the trail

LAFAYETTE, IND., — Five leading trailer-industry manufacturers have formed a buying consortium.

The plan: Identify ways to make component and raw-material purchases cheaper for all the members.

The buying group — The Transportation Equipment Purchasing Consortium, or TEPC –consists of Wabash, Utilimaster, Kentucky Trailer, Federal Signal and VT Specialized Services Corporation.

Wabash is one of the largest dry van manufacturers in North America.

Kentucky Trailer is America’s leading manufacturer of custom moving vans for the industry, while Utilimaster has been building specialized bodies for delivery, bakery/snack and other similar specialties since 1973.

Federal Signal specializes in workplace safety and emergency materials, and VT Specialized Services is another specialized body builder

"The main object of TEPC is to identify and increase efficiencies and economies of scale in the procurement of raw materials, component parts and services therefore creating an economic benefit for its members," said Steven Miller, vice president of supply chain management for Wabash National.
