407 ETR replaces minimum trip toll with ‘flat fee’ for trucks

WOODBRIDGE, Ont. — 407 ETR, the private toll highway north of Toronto, has changed the way it bills trucks when a transponder isn’t detected on either entry or exit.

The company is eliminating the “Minimum Trip” charge for heavy vehicles and replacing it with a “Flat Toll.” In the past, if the heavy vehicle transponder was only captured on entry or exit but not both, the highway would charge a “minimum trip” distance from the interchange where the transponder was captured to the next closest exit or entry.

Starting last month, in those instances, a flat toll will be billed to the transponder account that represents the distance and cost of an average trip on the highway for its class of heavy vehicle.

In cases where the distance between the entry or exit captured and the end of the highway is shorter than the average heavy vehicle trip, 407 will bill the shorter distance.

Additionally, 407 is doing away with minimum video trip charges for heavy vehicles, including trailer plates, when a transponder is not captured on either entry or exit. The company says this is good news for companies who lease trailers that are used on the private highway.
