$70-million container order lifts Wabash out of doldrums

LAFAYETTE, Ind. (Sept. 6, 2001) — Wabash National Corp. said yesterday that it has received orders exceeding $70 million US from J.B. Hunt Transport Services for 6000 53-foot domestic containers, as well as a smaller number of container chassis.

The new containers use the trailer maker’s DuraPlate sidewall material, a steel composite design that allows smooth interior sides and sufficient strength to permit the containers to be positioned on the bottom of a “double-stack” on a railcar.

J.B. Hunt, one of North America’s largest truckload and intermodal fleets, is converting its entire intermodal container fleet to stackable 53-foot equipment.

The order is significant for Wabash, North America’s largest manufacturer of trailers. Like other manufacturers serving the trucking industry, the company has struggled to rationalize production amid slumping freight volumes.
