Alberta hires more highway enforcement
EDMONTON — Truckers in Alberta shouldn’t be surprised to see more highway cops perched by the side of the road this summer.
Twenty new Sheriff Highway Patrol cops were dispatched last weekend throughout the province.
According to the Prairie Post, a total of 84 sheriffs will be on the roadways by the beginning of July 2007. They will patrolling mainly Calgary, Edmonton, Red Deer, Lethbridge, Medicine Hat, Grande Prairie and Fort McMurray.
The Highway Patrol was introduced in September 2006. Since then, the force has laid nearly 25,000 traffic offence charges and investigated nearly 200 collisions.
