Alberta says high-speed needs riders

CALGARY — Alberta’s transport minister says that a much-hyped high speed rail link through North America’s fastest-growing region may be scrapped if there’s not enough interest from would-be riders.

Lyle Oberg said the plan for a train link between Alberta’s two largest cities, Edmonton and Calgary, is still being reviewed. The government is considering a market demand study to gauge public interest, according to Canadian Press.

A preliminary study gave the idea the green light in October 2004.

The Edmonton-Calgary corridor, with Red Deer as the pivot point, is quickly becoming one of the busiest transportation arteries in Canada. Line-haul truckers who travel would welcome a rail link to help relieve volume on Hwy. 2.
