All of Newfoundland re-signs: Billboards called ‘firewood’

ST. JOHN’S — It’ll soon be a heck of a lot easier for drivers to find their way around Newfoundland and Labrador, but it’s coming at the expense of a lot of private businesses.

The provincial government has announced it’s about to replace highway signage and billboards around the Rock to make the place more tourist friendly.

According to the St. John’s Telegram, Newfoundland is going with the internationally recognized Tourist-Oriented Directional Signage system (TODS).

The news has been welcomed by the local hospitality industry, which has already had blowback from the idea, mostly because a lot of businesses have ponied up good money — sometimes up to $4,000 — for the billboards, and now they’re being told to take them down.

“Some of these signs, I mean, they’re only firewood,” said Bruce Sparkes, the president of Hospitality Newfoundland and Labrador (HNL).

The new TODS signs are blue background, white letters and they have an icon for the services and the name.
