American Freightways to recalibrate 1500 diesel engines to reduce emissions

COLUMBUS, Ind. (Oct. 30, 2001) — Cummins Inc. has reached an agreement with American Freightways, the Harrison, Ark.-based less-than-truckload carrier, to recalibrate 1500 diesel engines to reduce NOx (nitrous oxide) engine emissions.

The engines, 1997 and 1998 M11 and M11 Plus models, will be recalibrated over the next six months at regular maintenance intervals using Cummins INSITE/ESDN software as a tool for initial recalibration, and later using Cummins INSPEC software as a management tool to adjust and maintain engine parameters.

Cummins is providing American Freightways with recalibration software, as well as engine stickers for each recalibrated engine to indicate that it meets the optional low-NOx standard set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

American Freightways, recently acquired by FedEx Corp., is a scheduled for-hire carrier of less-than-truckload shipments providing direct all-points delivery service in 40 contiguous states.
