American giant with Canadian arms named most admired

SAN MATEO, Calif. — Who says truckers don’t get any respect? One of America’s biggest truckers was named “the most admired company in the transportation and logistics industry” on the prestigious Fortune magazine list of “America’s most admired companies.”

Con-Way is a $4.2 billion freight transport and logistics company working in almost every sector of trucking, from trailer manufacturing to LTL and truckload freight services.

In Canada, the company has operated Con-Way Canada LTL service since 1992, with 27 service locations in all 10 provinces and three territories.

The Most Admired list is considered the definitive report card on corporation reputations.

Fortune’s survey partners at Hay Group started with the 1,000 largest U.S. companies ranked by revenue and the top foreign ones operating in the U.S.

To create the top 20, an overall list of Most Admired Companies, Hay Group asked the 3,322 executives, directors, and securities analysts who had responded to the industry surveys to select the ten companies they admired. They chose from a list of companies that ranked in the top 25 percent in last year’s survey, plus those that finished in the top 20 percent of their industry. A total of 616 companies in 68 industries were surveyed.

“This is an exceptional honor for our enterprise,” said Douglas W. Stotlar, Con-way president and CEO. “At the end of the day, our employees are the backbone of what we do for our customers and our reputation as a quality company. Being recognized as Fortune’s most admired company in these industries is a true testament to the integrity and dedication of Con-way people.”

The list and related stories were published in the March 19th issue and is currently available online at www.fortune.com.
