Anti-idling bylaw gets icy reception
YELLOWKNIFE — City council here passed new amendments to an anti-idling bylaw, which prohibits vehicles idling longer than three minutes when it is above -10 C, and longer than 15 minutes when it’s below that temperature.
According to local media, the bylaw passed despite opposition from the NWT Motor Transport Association.
According to reports, there would be a one-year public education campaign, followed by regular enforcement. Offenders will be charged $40 per offence.
Others were concerned that the bylaw could interfere with another local rule that prohibits driving when a driver’s vision is obstructed by ice or heavy snow.
