ATA chief getting a look for top federal transport job

WASHINGTON — U.S. trucking lobbyist Bill Graves is a top candidate to replace Norman Mineta as U.S. transportation secretary.

According to Reuters, government and industry sources say the CEO of the American Trucking Associations is being seriously considered for the Cabinet post in President Bush’s Administration.

Graves — who as a former Kansas governor is no stranger to politics, is a strong candidate, a government source told Reuters.

Mineta, who announced his resignation in June, was the longest serving transportation secretary and the only Democrat in Bush’s Cabinet.

Graves comes from a Midwest trucking family and was a major fund-raiser for Bush, Reuters reports. He took over as chief executive of the American Trucking Associations in 2003.
