Atlantic Canada to add security features to drivers’ licences

CHARLOTTETOWN – All four Atlantic provinces will include high-tech, biometric features to their driver’s licences.

The move, according to Canadian Press, is intended to reassure the U.S. government that Canada’s driver’s licences are as secure as passports. Governments in Eastern Canada have opposed U.S. plans to require anyone travelling across the border to carry a passport.

The new driver’s licence security features will likely include infrared and holographic images, reports CP.

PEI will be the first province to issue the new licences – likely this fall – while New Brunswick and Newfoundland and Labrador will begin next year, and Nova Scotia will join in 2009.
