Batts resigns as TCA president

ALEXANDRIA, Va. (Feb. 7, 2000) — Lana Batts, the outspoken and forceful leader of the Truckload Carriers Association, resigned as president at the group’s executive committee meeting in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., over the weekend.

Batts said her decision anticipates a crucial upcoming vote on whether the TCA would retain or restructure its affiliation with the American Trucking Associations, a federation of associations that represent various sectors of the trucking industry.

“I did not want to be an issue and did not want any side assuming that I would manage whatever (association) emerged,” said Batts, who spent five years as president.

TCA officers have endorsed integration with ATA as part of an ambitious restructuring plan, but the membership appears divided.

Batts will stay on through the TCA annual meeting, March 19-22, when the vote will be taken. She said she does not know what she will do, but wants to stay in trucking, possibly working for an industry supplier.
