BC begins work on Simon Fraser Bridge twin
VICTORIA — Work on twinning the Simon Fraser Bridge will begin this week in a bid to expand container transportation capacity between the Port of Prince Rupert and the Prince George Inland Terminal, which is currently being constructed.
Ottawa has agreed to kick-in about $18 million dollars for the $42 million project.
The design for the new twin crossing was recently been completed, and is expected to be out for tender for construction within the next couple weeks.
Deputy Premier Shirely Bond told media that crews starting work today are “day labor” to begin the “access work.”
Officials estimate the new span will be completed in 2009.
Prince George, located 500 miles east of the budding Port of Prince Rupert, is in close proximity to B.C.’s large fibre reserves and other natural resources.
The Prince Rupert Port has been successful in evolving from a small bulk cargo port into an emerging container gateway. It recently completed conversion of its Fairview terminal, which is emerging as an alternative to the Port of Vancouver.
