BC Ferries to beef up security

NANAIMO, B.C. — Airport-style security checks of passengers and vehicles may soon be a reality at B.C. Ferries.

In accordance with upcoming Transport Canada requirements, the ferry service is increasing its security system with more routine screening of passengers and vehicle checks, according to a Canadian Press report.

There is no “master plan” to screen each and every passenger, however, says President David Hahn.

Hahn said B.C. Ferries will continue to operate with the least amount of intrusion possible.

The company has already begun the process of increased security by adding cameras, providing employees with ID, designating restricted areas, and installing more fencing around terminals.

A December 2006 report on maritime terrorism by the Rand Corp., a Washington, D.C.-based think tank, noted ferries are particularly vulnerable to terrorist attacks because of the speed needed to board passengers, cargo and vehicles that could conceal explosives, CP reports.
