BC Rail to exit intermodal business

NORTH VANCOUVER, B.C. (Dec. 18, 2001) — The British Columbia Railway Co said it will discontinue intermodal service on Feb. 1, 2002, in order to reduce costs and focus on hauling bulk and forest products by rail.

BC Rail offers trailer-on-flat-car (ToFC) service, where highway semi-trailers are placed onto flat rail cars. It is uneconomical with limited growth potential, the railroad said, adding that it would have had to spend $30 million over the next 10 years to sustain ToFC service.

BC Rail, a Crown Corporation owned by the province of British Columbia, said it is planning a new business model that will be implemented by 2004. The company wants to reduce costs.
