Big Rig show to double as fundraiser for family of slain trucker

LANSDOWNE, Ont. — The sixth annual 1000 Islands Big Rig Show in Lansdowne, Ont. this weekend will be dedicated to the memory of a murdered trucker.

The show is about lots of chrome and festivities, but truckers and enthusiasts can also help out the family of Donny Woods, an Athens-based driver who was shot to death in his cab late last month in the Pickering area. His trailer loaded with beef was also stolen.

Police have not made any arrests. Transport truck thefts, and even hijackings, are not uncommon, but police think this might be the first time in Canada that a trucker has been murdered for his load.

Donny’s wife Nicole was spent the last couple weeks looking for more answers. She’s reaching out to the trucking industry to help find out what led to Donny’s death.

Organizers of the 1000 Islands event recently announced that the truck show, located at the Lansdowne Fair, will also serve as a fundraiser for Nicole and her 13-year-old son, Alex.

Those who want to donate can do so at its registration table Saturday until 4 p.m.
