Bison buys Glenncoe fleets

WINNIPEG — Bison is venturing across the mountains. The Winnipeg-based transport carrier, Canada’s 13th largest, has announced the acquisitions of Glenncoe Transport of Kelowna and its subsidiary Winfield Motor Freight Inc.

Glenncoe Transport, which also ranks on Today’s Trucking’s annual Top 100 For-Hire carrier list, is a truckload carrier, primarily serving British Columbia, Alberta and the US Pacific Northwest. It operates 160 trucks, 550 trailers and employs more than 200 people.

Bison plans on running Glenncoe as a distinct
separate business both companies say.

Winfield Motor Freight is an LTL service provider with 40 trucks, 20 trailers and 50 employees, connecting B.C.’s west coast with the northern Interior. Both companies are owned and operated by the Coe family since 1972.

“The acquisition of Glenncoe Transport and Winfield Motor Freight is part of our continued investment in serving the transportation needs of the Western Canadian marketplace,” said Don Streuber, President & CEO of Bison Transport in a press release. “Glenncoe brings a committed management team, support staff and driver base, along with significant knowledge and understanding of the Alberta and BC market. Through Bison, they will have access to the depth and support of a much larger national carrier, including our systems, IT, and administrative services.”

Glenncoe President Don Coe adds: “Bison Transport has proven their ability to build a strong transportation business, staying true to their core values, and committed to their people. We look forward to being part of that culture, and gaining from the administration, systems, and marketing support, while at the same time running Glenncoe as a distinct separate business.”

Don Coe and his brother Glenn Coe will continue on in leadership positions at Glenncoe Transport and Winfield Motor Freight.

For Bison, which has historically grown from within, the acquisition follows a series of recent expansions and new service launches, including the opening of a large terminal-maintenance facility in Calgary, a new intermodal division connecting Ontario with Alberta andBC, a refrigerated division serving U.S. and Canada, and the rapid expansion of turnpike double operations (twin 53′ trailers) in the three prairie provinces.

Glenncoe provides significant truckload capacity to the Alberta and BC marketplace, having established strong connections to the growing Asian import business arriving in Vancouver, and strong regional knowledge of the BC interior market as well.
