Calgary preparing for busy roadwork season
CALGARY, Alta. — Calgary bureaucrats are warning that this summer will present more construction-related delays and detours in the area than ever before.
More than half a billion dollars is being invested in the city’s transportation projects this year, and city officials are advising motorists to be prepared for delays.
“You can expect to see a lot of detours — overall, it’s going to be an extremely busy, busy year in the construction industry,” Calgary Mayor, Dave Bronconnier told the Calgary Sun. “It’s all worth it in the end, because Calgarians know we’re too far behind in infrastructure, and if we don’t keep at it at this pace, we do not have a hope in ever getting caught up.”
Several projects will have a major impact on commercial traffic. They include: work on Glenmore Trail between Macleod Trail and Crowchild Trail and widening of Crowchild Trail. Meanwhile, the city is beginning construction of a $250 million leg of the Stoney Trail ring road between Hwy. 1 and Hwy. 2, the Sun reports.
"Without a doubt, it’s our busiest season ever," Calgary transportation director Ian Norris says.
