California tells drivers to keep hands on wheel, not phones
SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Schwarzeneggerland has joined the states of New York and New Jersey in banning drivers from holding their cell phones while driving.
California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger signed a bill last week that requires drivers use hands-free technology when talking on cell phones and operating a vehicle, according to the Associated Press.
The law, will takes effect Jan. 8 2008, exempts commercial truck drivers by allowing them to use “push-to-talk” functions until July 1, 2011.
Violators will be fined $20 for the first infraction and $50 for subsequent violations once the law goes into effect.
