Call goes out for new ferry service to Newfoundland

BELLEDUNE, N.B. (July 31, 2001) — The Belledune Port Authority is asking shipping companies for proposals for to provide roll-on, roll-off truck ferry service between western Newfoundland and northern New Brunswick.

The service would provide an alternative for trucking companies that currently must travel the highways through New Brunswick, northern Nova Scotia, across Cape Breton Island, and up the west coast of Newfoundland to Corner Brook.

The call for proposals seeks a vessel to ferry in excess of 100 trailers as well as 12 drivers two to three times a week year-round on a dock-to-dock distance of 310 nautical miles. Service would begin by May 2002. Proposals are being accepted until mid-September.
