Canada Customs cracks down on bogus release messages

OTTAWA (Oct. 10, 2000) — Canada Customs released measured aimed to crack down on the generation of false RNS (Release Notification System) messages which are in turn presented to a sufferance warehouse for the release of goods.

Beginning April 1, 2001, sufferance warehouse operators must be able to either receive RNS electronically as an RNS participant or by hard copy (i.e. facsimile) from a service provider such as a customs broker.

This means that the sufferance warehouse will not release goods from their warehouse without having received either an RNS message directly from the system or from their dedicated service provider, or a customs-stamped delivery authority copy of a cargo control document.
