Canada, India to cooperate on transport initiatives
OTTAWA — Transport Canada confirmed its intentions to pursue a Memorandum of Understanding with the Indian government to focus on issues including road safety, highway management, and intelligent transport systems.
Canada’s Transport Minister John Baird met on March 24 with Shri Kamal Nath, India’s Minister of Road Transport and Highways.
"Both Ministers discussed future opportunities for Canadian firms in India’s burgeoning infrastructure sector and agreed to pursue a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU). This MOU will focus on issues of mutual interest including road safety and Intelligent Transport Systems," a note from Transport Canada says.
Nath had earlier told members of the Ontario Chamber of Commerce that Canadian businesses are not taking full advantage of trade opportunities with India.
He said Canada is NAFTA-centric and Canadian companies have not built infrastructure to deal with countries beyond the Atlantic.
