Canada’s GDP up for July

OTTAWA — Gross domestic product (GDP) perked up 0.3 percent in July following June’s 0.2 percent increase in GDP.

Transportation and warehousing services grew 1.8 percent in July, with rail and air transportation showing growth alongside trucking. However, the report noted that was mainly because the postal strike had ended and activity returned to normal.

Manufacturing was up 1.4 percent after three months of decline, with manufacturers of motor vehicles and parts, fabricated metals, machinery and chemical products walking away with significant gains. Food and furniture manufacturing was down.

Wholesale trade was up 1.5 percent, with increase in motor vehicles and parts, household goods, as well as machinery and equipment.

The declines, Statscan said, were in retail trade, non-residential construction, and mining and oil and gas extraction.
