Canuck artist called upon to capture UPS history
MISSISSAUGA, Ont. — Original artwork by Canadian painter, illustrator and muralist, Yannick Picard was chosen recently by UPS to commemorate 100 years of service for the parcel and LTL powerhouse.
The 15-ft centennial mural was unveiled last month at UPS’ global headquarters in Atlanta, Ga.
a story that captures UPS’s legacy, the company said
From Montmagny, Que., Picard is described as a rising artist who is quickly building an impressive portfolio of international work. His pieces include a mural for a United Nations art event in Honduras, and a mural for the “Winnipeg International Mural Festival” at the Fairmount Hotel.
“Yannick was chosen because of his artistic ability to skillfully weave images, into a story, that visually captures UPS’s legacy of corporate giving, volunteerism and sustainable business practices,” says Sylvie Hamel, UPS manager of Identity and Design. “We are honored that a talented Canadian artist could help UPS portray its 100 years of service into an innovative piece of art.”
Picard’s centennial captures the four pillars of the company’s centennial celebration: customers, environment, community and employees in four sections within the mural. The main colur palette for the centennial mural is green to communicate growth, progression and preservation of the environment.
“I focused on the use of lines and images to create a feeling of movement in the mural. My goal was to capture the UPS centennial story by illustrating its continuous evolution since opening for business in 1907,” said Picard. “I’m happy to see the completed piece, as it took me four months to create the mural from the initial sketches to the final 15 by 6 foot canvas.”
UPS began its operations in Atlanta in 1907 and in Canada over 30 years ago as the first international operation to launch outside the U.S.
