Cascade’s unionized drivers might strike
CALGARY — Cascade Carriers — one of Alberta’s oldest bulk carriers and a subsidiary of the Mullen Group — might be facing a strike by about 56 of its owner-operators.
The unionized drivers, members of the Canadian Auto Workers (CAW) Local 4050, issued a notice Friday that after voting 92 percent in favor of a strike, they’re in a legal position to walk off the job anytime in the next 60 days providing they give 72 hours’ notice
“February 25th is looming as the most likely date,” the union states.
Cascade delivers powdered concrete, fly ash, sand and other materials for the cement and oil field industries. Their largest customers are Lafarge, Rolling Mix, Inland Cement, BJ Services, Schlumberger, Trican, Sil Industrial, Sangel, Trans Alta (Sundance), Badger Sand, Sand Source and, indirectly, Syncrude.
Negotiations between the CAW and the Cascade Carriers started in July, 2010.
The parties have already met with a conciliator appointed by Federal Mediation Conciliation Services under the Canada Labour Code.
