Cat Pocket Technician: Palm-based Engine Diagnostics

Caterpillar’s Pocket Technician software lets you check 22 engine-status and 23 configuration parameters (and change 11 of them) with a relatively inexpensive handheld computer running the Palm operating system.

Cat says Pocket Technician provides 95% of the functions truck owners want, and works with Cat and competing engines. A “driver” version features lifetime and trip fuel-mileage totals, engine operation info (temperature, pressure, etc.), diagnostic codes (with suggested actions), read-and-change capability on some engine parameters, and maintenance information.

The more complete “fleet” version, ready before year-end, is for fleet managers and sales and service personnel. It adds fleet information software plus read-and-change capability on all engine parameters. The Driver version can be upgraded to Fleet specs. Both packages come with software, a plug-in adapter, and a truck connecting cable.

You have to buy the Palm device separately. Pocket Tec is available online at www.cattruckengines.com/buystuff.
