Changes to toll and collection system at Niagara border
FORT ERIE, Ont. (August 15, 2001) — The Buffalo and Fort Erie Public Bridge Authority and the Niagara Falls Bridge Commission announced plans to convert toll collection for commercial vehicles from two-way to one-way, westbound into Canada.
The plan, scheduled to start in winter 2002, is intended to ease traffic by eliminating a toll stop at the border on the way into Canada.
Tolls for passenger cars switched to a one-way system two years ago.
The toll amount will be determined by the number of axles on a commercial vehicle, as opposed to weight, and overall costs may change for individual carriers depending on their frequent direction of travel.
The bridge authorities said the change to axle count will prepare them for implementation of the E-Z Pass system for electronic toll collection, expected to debut on the Niagara River Bridges in early 2003.
