City appeals to province for cellphone ban
LETHBRIDGE, Alta. — Transport Minister Luke Ouellette is being urged by Lethbridge City Council to amend the Traffic Safety Act to ban hand-held cell phones while operating a vehicle.
A local man’s plea to restrict cellphone use was forwarded to the provincial minister by council, according to the Lethbridge Herald.
Taras Negrych asked for council’s support for a civic bylaw banning mobile phones by drivers. Instead of a local ban, council appealed to Ouellette for a province-wide rule.
Council members agreed with Lethbridge regional police that such a law would be outside the normal scope of municipal governments.
In his letter, Negrych described how he was nearly struck down recently in a downtown crosswalk by an oblivious driver talking on his cellphone.
