City looks to Ottawa for extra truck route dollars
SAULT STE MARIE, Ont. — The northern Ontario city of Sault Ste. Marie is appealing to the federal government to cover rising costs for a new transport route that runs from the International Bridge to Second Line.
According to the Sault Star, the city says it needs an additional $1.5 million to fund the new transportation corridor, of which the bulk of the funding comes from the Canada-Ontario Strategic Highway Infrastructure Program.
Original costs pegged the project at $15.1 million, but the additional costs raised the project to $18.9 million.
Since cost estimates for the project were prepared in 2002 and the project did not begin until 2004, original estimates were slightly low and two major areas were added to the project, the newspaper reports.
