CN to add up to 300 53-foot intermodal reefer containers

MONTREAL (July 19, 2002) — Canada’s largest railroad said it plans to buy 150 refrigerated intermodal containers with an option to buy 150 more as the railway tries to bolster its grocery business.

Canadian National said the addition of 53-foot containers positions it “to capture lucrative backhaul movements of frozen meats, poultry, and French fries that are produced in Western Canada and destined for Eastern markets.”

CN began using intermodal containers to move groceries between Central Canada to points west two years ago.
