Composite Trailer

Martin Marietta Composites rolled out a 48-foot, live-floor, transfer trailer, the first composite trailer of its type made in North America.

The trailer weighs 13,140 pounds and has a capacity of 125 cubic yards. Martin Marietta said it’s lighter and more durable than conventional trailers because it’s made of virtually all fibreglass-reinforced polymer materials, with the exception of the king pin, landing gear, axles, wheels, brake components, and miscellaneous fasteners. The walking floor is a Keith or Hallco drive unit with a composite T-slat floor, and the sidewalls and front panels are 1-3/16-inch-thick composite sandwich panels.

Martin Marietta makes its trailers at a 185,000-square-foot plant in North Carolina. They are produced in 40-foot, 45-foot, 48-foot, and 57-foot models. For information: www.martinmarietta.com; 919/882-2300.
