Container hub plans slated for the Sault
SAULT Ste. MARIE, Ont. — Canadian and Chinese business interests are considering this northern Ontario town to house an intermodal staging centre.
According to the Sault Star, Sault Ste. Marie was visited last week by a 13 person delegation headed by the vice mayor of Shenzhen, located near Hong Kong.
The group wanted to have a look at the city, possibly as a location for a multi-modal warehousing and distribution centre, reports the Star. The hub would reportedly cut transport time between the Chinese city and some of its American markets by up to four days.
Containers would be shipped to Vancouver, sent via rail to the Sault, before being sorted and hauled by rail and truck to central and northeastern U.S. markets.
Shenzhen exports about US$40 billion of goods to North America a year.
However, before any such thing happens, the city has a lot of work to do, admits Sault Mayor John Rowswell.
Stakeholders are waiting on a multi-modal and feasibility study by KPMG before proceeding with proposed plans.
