Continental pumps up truck, trailer tire line

Continental Tire North America has launched no fewer than seven fuel-efficient and vocational truck tires this year, all based on a new casing design.

New over-the-road steer, drive, and trailer tires are designated HSL, HDL, and HTL respectively (the nomenclature indicates they are heavy-duty and long haul). The steer/all-position HSL and drive HDT also carry Eco Plus names to underscore the fact that they are an efficient, fuel-saving design.

For the vocational user, the rollout includes a unique steer tire called the HSU for urban use on heavily loaded steer axles. It’s ideal for front-loader refuse trucks which encounter high axle loads and a large amount of scrub.

Construction trucks that spend up to 50 per cent of their time off highway are targeted with the HSC, a steer/all-position with deep 23/32-inch tread depth and a cut/chip resistant tread compound. The HDC with 30/32-inch skid depth and an aggressive tread for all-weather traction is also designed with construction trucks in mind. For severe off-highway operations, the new HDO drive tire has an even more aggressive, self-cleaning tread.
The Eco Plus tires combine new casing and tread designs and compounds that are said to make them the most efficient long-haul tires available. Other features include a unique angled shoulder-protection rib for both steer and trailer tires, and alignment indicators on the steer tire so you can quickly identify front-end misalignment problems before the tire becomes severely worn.
