Coquihalla still closed: reports

KAMLOOPS, B.C. — As of early this morning, a major stretch of the Coquihalla Highway in B.C. remained closed to traffic.

Official say poor weather and the looming threat of avalanches continue to keep the highway shut down between Hope and Merritt., B.C. It has been closed since last Thursday.

As of 8 am (PT) this morning, no major news outlets or radio stations in B.C. were reporting that the highway has yet reopened.

Ministry of Transportation’s Jeff Knight told Canadian Press late last night that work crews are standing by, but little could be done until weather conditions improve. He could not estimate when that would be.

Helicopter crews were able to trigger a few avalanches yesterday afternoon but were grounded because of poor visibility.

In the meantime, drivers are being rerouted to Highway 1 through the Fraser Canyon, or Highway 3 via Princeton.
