CTA relieved over passage of Section 110 amendment
OTTAWA (May 29, 2000) — The Canadian Trucking Alliance expressed relief over last week’s move in the U.S. Congress to amend Section 110 of the 1996 immigration reform act. The bill, titled “Immigration and Naturalization Service Data Management Improvement Act of 2000,” would eliminate the 1996 legislation’s provisions creating, by 2001, documentation requirements for all persons travelling into and out of the United States.
CTA, which had lobbied hard for the change, had predicted that implementation of the dispositions of the original Section 110 would create line-ups of up to 17 hours at some busy Canada-US border crossings.
The new legislation does not create any new documentary requirements, but mandates the creation of a database system to better track arrival and departure of those aliens now requiring entry visas.
