CTHRC Driver Trainers Get Certified

TORONTO — With a looming driver shortage and massive changes on all fronts in the trucking industry, a lot depends on the skills of the next batch of truck drivers — and the quality of the people who train those new drivers.

Enter the Canadian Trucking Human Resources Council (CTHRC), and their new online Professional Driver Trainer Program.

Recognizing a need within the industry to have qualified, experienced trainers, the CTHRC has created a certification program that acknowledges past work experience, is acknowledged by the Canadian Vocational Association, and available online.

The recognition includes:

In-class certificates — Applicants must have conducted 1,500 hours of in-class training, completed a recognized train-the-trainer program, and passed the Test of Workplace Essential Skills for Professional Driver Trainers.

In-cab certificates — Applicants must have 1,500 hours of in-cab training experience, five years of driving experience, a Class 1/A driver’s licence, and have completed a recognized train-the-trainer program and the Test of Workplace Essential Skills for Professional Driver Trainers.

In-class and in-cab certificates — Applicants must have a minimum of 1,500 hours of in-class training and 1,500 hours of in-cab training, five years of driving experience, a Class 1/A licence, and have completed a recognized train-the-trainer program and the Test of Workplace Essential Skills for Professional Driver Trainers.

Application fees have been set at $300 for an in-class certification, $300 for an in-cab certification, and $450 for a combined in-class and in-cab certification.
