Cummins leads worldwide diesel production
NEW YORK — In terms of diesel engines over 200 horsepower, Cummins Engine Co. led the way in 1997 production. The Indiana-based company built 218,000 engines in that class last year, followed by Navistar International (198,000) and Caterpillar (115,000). Figures are compiled by Rhein Associates of New York.
In the 50-horsepower-and-up diesel category, the leader was Japan’s Isuzu Motors with a 1997 build of 502,000 engines, followed by Cummins (422,000), Italy’s Fiat (361,000), and Caterpillar (324,000)..
The other big players in the 200-horse class were:
Daimler-Benz — 83,000
Detroit Diesel — 82,000
Renault — 66,000
Volvo — 61,000
Hino — 58,000
Mitsubishi — 55,000
Saab — 48,000
