Cummins sells FreightQuest group to Nexterna

OMAHA, Neb. (May 3, 2001) — Nexterna Inc., a wireless communications company, has acquired the FreightQuest subsidiary of Cummins Inc.

FreightQuest, based in Windham, N.H., produces a dispatch and freight management system of the same name. It combines Global Positioning System (GPS) location tracking, maps, and driver/trip task lists with information about vehicle availability to quickly provide information on a specific or an entire fleet’s status and availability.

The FreightQuest system runs on a Windows NT application server platform. Each truck is equipped with a handheld terminal running Windows CE that allows drivers to enter data and send messages without using a keyboard.

Drivers simply plug their portable terminal into an infrared dock at the central office in the morning and download their entire delivery schedule. Then the dispatch center can send additional jobs directly out to the mobile device on any truck throughout the day.

Nexterna said it plans to market FreightQuest as part of its FleetGo line of product line for the transportation industry.

Nexterna is a part of Fenix, a technology holding company formed by Union Pacific Corp.
